The French have sometimes cause to rejoice. For decades, they have been unhappy – with reason – with what their political elites have delivered. But today, they can see how mediocre governance is shared around Europe. For instance, we can cite Germany’s 16 years of fiasco with Angela Merkel and now the UK, with three PMs since 2016 (May, Johnson and Truss), whose lack of levity and amateurism will be remembered in history.
