Ultimately, the party in power in Taiwan, the DPP, which is the furthest from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), has won hands down. Lai Ching-te won the presidential election on 13 January 2024, with a hefty 40% of votes, almost 7 points ahead of the Kuomintang candidate Hou Yu-ih and significantly outperforming the latest polls.
